পরিসংখ্যান বলছে বাংলাদেশে প্রতি বছর প্রায় ২০০ কোটি টাকার বেশি মাছের আঁশ রপ্তনি করা হচ্ছে। মাছ বাজারগুলোর বটি ওয়ালারা ১৫ থেকে ২০ টাকা কেজি দরে বিক্রি করছেন এ আঁশ। তারপর এক থেকে দুই মাধ্যম ঘুরে প্রক্রিয়াজাতকরণের মাধ্যমে চলে যাচ্ছে জাপান, চীন, ইন্দোনেশিয়া, ফিলিপাইন, থাইল্যান্ড, দক্ষিণ কোরিয়ার মতো দেশগুলোতে। যশোরে মাছের আঁশের চাহিদা এখন অনেক বেশি। বড় বাজারে নিয়মিত মাছ কাটতে বটি ওয়ালারা প্রতি কেজিতে ১০ থেকে ১৫ টাকা করে নেন। এর বাইরে মাছের আঁশ বিক্রি করে বছরে কমপক্ষে ২০ হাজার টাকা বাড়তি আয় করে থাকেন। শুধু বড় বাজার নয়, আশপাশের সব বাজারের বটি ওয়ালারা মাছের নাড়িভুড়ি ও আঁশ বিক্রি করে থাকেন। এরপর এই সংগৃহীত আঁশ চট্টগ্রাম এর আড়তদাররা বিদেশে রপ্তানি করেন। রপ্তানি করার জন্য আগে অবশ্যই এর জন্য পর্যাপ্ত লাইসেন্স করিয়ে নিতে হবে। এবং অনুমোদন সহ অনুমতি গ্রহণ করতে হবে। পর্যাপ্ত আইনানুগ অনুমতি না থাকলে পরবর্তীতে অনেক ধরণের সমস্যার সম্মুখীন হতে পারে। সামগ্রিকভাবে, মাছ ধরার শিল্পের সাথে জড়িতদের জন্য মাছের আঁশ রপ্তানি একটি লাভজনক ব্যবসা বলে বিবেচিত হতে পারে, কারণ তাদের বিভিন্ন শিল্পে মূল্যবান ব্যবহার রয়েছে। এর জন্য এটা নিশ্চিত করা গুরুত্বপূর্ণ যে আঁশগুলো টেকসইভাবে কাটা হয় এবং এই শিল্পের দীর্ঘমেয়াদী কার্যকারিতা নিশ্চিত করার জন্য সঠিক নিয়ম ও নির্দেশিকা অনুসরণ করা হয়।
